Bound in contemporary calf, gilt embellishments on spine, title plate and covers' edges, marbled endpapers. The inside front cover with a 19th century armorial book plate for H. Trouchin and a later Art Nouveau plate naming Alfred Scmid.

Of particular delight to readers, past and present, is the celebrated plate showing a skeletal figure standing before a lumbering rhinoceros. This creature, the first of its kind seen in Europe, was sketched from life in Amsterdam by Wandelaar.
