The original painting, completed in 1849, by Guffens was exhibited at the Thirty-Seventh Annual Exhibition of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1860. It was purchased from the Paris Salon in 1849, following a jury selection to help rebuild the academy's European collection after the devastating fire of 1845. Th consignor's great-great-grandfather likely admired the original painting and commissioned a copy for his own collection. The original painting sold at Sotheby's New York, 29 October 2002.
