The Collection of Rocky and Avis Gardner, Baltimore, MD

An important recently discovered self portrait of the artist. Miller was referred to as "the American Raphael." An accolade he favored, as is evident in this portrait in which he wears a red cap of an artist and is dressed in 16th century Florentine style. Miller first studied with Thomas Sully and, possibly, Sarah Miriam Peale, while living in Baltimore. He later traveled to Paris and Rome for studies before returning to Baltimore in 1834 where he set up as a portrait artist.
