The New Orleans branch mint struck 17,741 double eagles early in 1861 under a rapid succession of federal, state and Confederate authority. The times were uncertain at best and mint operations were suspended altogether once the Civil War began in earnest.

The 1861-O double eagle is very scarce as a rule while higher grade specimens such as this example are quite rare. An historical coin of great interest to those specializing in Southern gold and Civil War era numismatics.
