Speyer studied under Carl von Haeberlin at the Stuttgart School of Art. Following his studies and travel through Italy and Tunisia, Speyer returned to Germany, settling in Munich. He is admired for his depiction of horses, of which this is particularly fine example. The mystical light of the gloaming imbues this Biblical scene with a quiet reverence and places this among Speyer's finest paintings to come to market.
