Late 18th century, mahogany, banded mahogany veneer framing the drawer and on all four sides, hinged rectangular lid, open interior over bag, square tapered downswept legs, stamped by lock plate "Gillow Lancaster".

Objects Deaccessioned from Hope Plantation in Windsor, NC

Robert Gillow (1704?1772) sailed to the West Indies in 1720 and is credited with bringing the first mahogany samples back to Lancaster. He founded the firm Gillow & Co. His sons continued the business and are credited with originating the telescopic dining-table. For over a century, the firm was known for its luxury furniture and furnishings. During the final years of the nineteenth century, the company ran into financial difficulty and closed 1903.

Replaced hinges; later slide and bag; break and repair to rear upper leg.
