North Carolina Splint Oak Buttocks Basket, att. Shelton Sisters

Late 19th century, of diminutive size in buttocks form, of narrow oak splints and bentwood frame, with very nice aged patina.

Mary Shelton (1837-1921) and her sister, Eliza (1845-1933) were both well known for their basket making. The 1910 US Federal Census lists the sisters living in Old Richmond, Forsyth County and gives their occupations as basket makers. Mary Shelton is further identified as a basket maker on her death certificate.

By direct consent to current consignor, who writes, "I was told many times by my mother Posey Mayee Shelton Guthrie and my grandmother, Poesy Markie Shelton Shelton, that they were made by someone in the family. When my grandmother moved in with us in 1952, she brought her baskets. She was very proud of them." The consignors' family hailed from Pittsylvania County, Virginia, birthplace of John Shelton and his two daughters, Mary (1837 - 1921) and Eliza (1845 - 1933).

Good condition; with minor staining to bottom exterior;
