A native of Manhattan's Lower East Side, Lasker moved from New York to Connecticut in 1955. He continued to go back to the city for inspiration and to paint.

Despite studying under Hans Hoffman, Lasker was a vocal critic of abstract painting during the post-war era.

Lasker was awarded numerous prizes and fellowships over the course of his long career, including the Prix de Rome and a Guggenheim Fellowship. His WPA era murals may still be seen in the post offices of Calumet, MI and Millsbury, MA.
