Large Japanese Imari Vase with Dancers

Meiji period, a very finely painted bulbous form vase with a short neck and flared wide rim, the body has detailed polychrome hand enameled decoration with two medallions of ladies wearing various decorative kimonos dancing together in almost a circle, alternating with images of two Imperial Phoenixes together, and chrysanthemums are featured over all of the vase, unmarked.

Art works from the Meiji period had strong imperial connotations often featuring the imperial flower, chrysanthemum, and phoenixes. This vase has dancers perhaps celebrating the Obon festival by performing the Bon Odori dance, where ladies in very decorative kimono perform a traditional dance in a circle.
