18th-19th century, Nepal, copper alloy and brass with reddish patina, in an early tribal style, Hanuman is one of the ten avatar incarnations of the important Hindu god Vishnu.

Given to Stewart Edwards by the Royal family of Nepal for his service and friendship in the late 1950s

This pair of Hanuman sculptures have iconographic similarities to the depiction of Hanuman in the 18th century art work Book of Eulogies and Iconographic Drawings in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art collection, M.81.206.6 featured in The Art of Nepal by Pratapaditya Pal.

Good condition with rubbing and wear appropriate with age and use; red pigment remains on the bodies of both figures, especially on their faces and headdresses.
