Spanish Colonial Style Carved Composition with St. Roch

Mid - 19th century, Philippines, carved wood, the figure is attired in a short robe and cloak with a bright red cross painted at the chest, a pilgrim's flask, in the left hand, is attached to a later rod, an angel holding a tablet and a dog with a loaf complete the composition.

St. Roch lived in the 14th century; his traditional biography has him traveling to Rome where he tended the sick and achieved some miraculous cures. When he fell ill himself he hid in the forest and would have perished had not a dog brought him bread and licked his wounds. St. Roch is specifically invoked against the plague.

Glue residue around the angel's base; the plinth has a hole in the bottom from a previous attachment; pleasing old patina.
