In the late 1800s eyeglasses became an important affectation for upper class Chinese. When they saw eyeglasses on visiting Westerners, the Chinese thought of these glasses as adding age and dignity to the wearer; since age meant wisdom and respect, so many of the Chinese nobility wore eyeglasses even if they did not need them.
