Circa 1828, worked in silk on linen, with alphabet rows to upper register, with verse "My child know thou the Lord / Thy Father God obey / Seek His protecting care by night / His guardian hand by day" flanked by trees above a floral spray, within a floral border., with maker's name and city "Mary Ann Burk / in her ninth year / Richmond Virginia" to bottom panel. Early paper backing with pencil inscription "Mary Ann Burk / Born Oct. 26 1819 / Died May 24 1869 / Married June 1843 / James Lawrence Apperson / Born Sept 3 1815."

SS 18 x 17 in.; DOA 20 x 19 in.

By descent.

The maker's marriage to James Apperson is listed as taking place June 2, 1843 in Henrico, Virginia, and they are listed in the 1850 United States Federal Census. Both are buried in Hollywood Cemetery.

Examined out of the frame; stitched to backing; with some stitch loss to verse; staining to center.
