Oil on canvas, signed and dated by the artist at lower left "Eugene E. Speicher, 1912;" half length portrait of Ms. Schoellkopf seated wearing a stylish red gown with purple iris corsage and emerald ear bobs, presented in a carved and gilt wood frame. This portrait was completed during Betsy's first marriage to Julius Schwill, a millionaire Chicago malt manufacturer, from 1905 until their divorce in 1922.

Eugene Speicher (NY, 1883-1962) studied under both Robert Henri and William Merritt Chase in New York City. He became particularly well-known for his portraits and was awarded the Beck Gold medal for portraiture at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia in 1920. The year Speicher completed this portrait of Betsy, he was nominated an associate of the National Academy of Design.
