South Carolina Pictorial Sampler, 1827
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Worked in silk on linen by Emaline Wright, with verse, "Virtue the chiefest beauty of the mind / The nobest ornament of human kind / Virtues our safeguard and our guiding star / that stirs up reason when our senses err;" surmounting pictorial presentation depicting a house with green lawn and a lone cow beneath a willow tree, with other motifs to include flower filled urns and rose sprays. The maker proudly proclaims in upper register "Emaline Wright / Sampler / done in the 11th year of her age 1827." It is possible that the maker is the daughter of William Wright (1775-1855) and Mary Polly Tucker (1788-1843) of Union County, SC. A family historian documented Emaline's birth as 1816 and no further record exists. The family Bible lists an Emaline Wright born in 1827. Further research is required to determine the identity of te maker.
