New Hampshire Needlework Sampler, 1829

Worked on loose weave linen in multi-colored silk thread, alphabet and numerical rows and date "1829" surmounting maker's name and "Wrought by Mary Ann Davis at age 13," with verse and bottom register with large floral sprays, within a dainty floral border, presented in a mahogany frame. Later inscription to backing reveals the maker married John Hoar in 1836. The New Hampshire Marriage Index does show such a marriage taking place in Keene, Cheshire August 24, 1836. The inscription also identifies her sister as Ellen Rebecca Davis who married Francis Elbridge Keyes.

Examined out of frame; with minor areas of soiling; stitched to cardboard backing.
