Rare Opaque Glass Whale Oil Lamp

Attributed to the New England Glass Company, circa 1830-1840, pressed and blown opaque white glass, spherical blown font above a triple wafer, the base pressed in a hollow stepped square with columnar corners, each side of square features a basket of flowers, lion's head to each top corner.

An example of this lamp is on display at the Corning Museum of Glass, accession number 68.4.496. A photograph of this lamp was also published in AMERICAN AND EUROPEAN PRESSED GLASS IN THE CORNING MUSEUM OF GLASS (1981, p. 201, pl. 11).

Loss to one corner of base; several old shallow flakes to base; two old stable hairlines with discoloration to one side of base.
