Japanese display cabinet (shodana), Meiji period (1868-1911), black lacquered surface, each door or drawer with finely executed gilt decoration to the exterior, colorful lacquer decoration to the door verso, the case with compartments enclosed by sliding panel doors above open shelves over hinged doors which surmount three side-by-side drawers, the cabinet raised on short scroll feet.

55 x 39 x 11 in.

The cabinet is accompanied by a paper label "This best gold Lacquered Cabinet exhibited on the late St. Louis Exhibition U.S.A." Written on the verso "1904". Private Collection, VA Purchased by Joseph Hughes, a founder of the Sherratt & Hughes Booksellers in Manchester, England.

Corners capped by decoratively incised metal.

Area of lacquer loss to rear; small area of lacquer loss to molding right side.
