Estate of Leah and Albert Levine, Raleigh, NC This painting is documented in The Johann Berthelsen Conservancy Archives

We wish to thank Lee Berthelsen, son of the artist, for the following information: "My Dad enjoyed painting this scene of a sailing ship docked at a New York City wharf because it reminded him of the ship on which he and his brother emigrated from Denmark to America, landing in New York in late 1890 when he was 7 years old. The brothers and their Mother settled in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, a city on Lake Michigan where her brother, Paul Neilsen, owned and captained a multi-masted schooner throughout the Great Lakes. This ship was also like that on which he came to America."

Light surface grime; no evidence of touch-up visible under black light inspection.
