Probably Edo or early Meiji Period, of folding but connected form, the polychrome panels depict a continuous painted scene of figures engaged in leisure activities centered around a flowing river. A large portion of the background appears to be gold leaf. The painted panels, laid on wood, are surrounded by a silk brocade border with mahogany frame and hand-chased brass mounts at the upper and lower corners, the reverse is covered with traditional hand-decorated Japanese paper.

Estate of the late Dr. Stewart Penfold Blake of Palo Alto, CA and Charlotte, NC Stewart Penfold Blake (Col. USArmy Ret.) was a proud soldier, superb story-teller, lover of music from Mozart to Benny Goodman, gracious host, wine connoisseur and knowledgeable art lover. Among his many proud accomplishments were his design of the test track for Porsche in Stuttgart, Germany and his design for carrying Venezuelan oil from the fields to the sea. His estate represents his life in appreciation of history and diverse cultures.

Some areas of paint loss especially to the right most panel; several patches to verso; one area where wood base is exposed; fracturing to the silk brocade border.
