Uncolored copperplate engraving, John Speed, A MAP OF VIRGINIA AND MARYLAND (London: Basset & Chiswell, 1676), engraved by Francis Lamb, text describing Maryland and Virginia on verso. This map was one of four late 17th century addenda to a reprint of an earlier Speed atlas. Familiar place names in the region are easily discernable, indicating rapid settlement and a growing prosperity at an early date.
