Japanese Meiji Period Exposition Bronze Censer
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Late 19th - early 20th century, monumental eight-part form consisting of a base, an urn and a lid united to form a dramatic figural composition. The base is a writhing dragon shooting flames upward to support a relief decorated urn having two dragon handles; the lid is cast as a rocky crag topped by a defiant eagle eying the dragon handles as they seemingly creep up from below. Bronze throughout with applied patina.

95.5 in. (nearly 8 feet tall)

Ex. The Sisters of Providence and St. Mary-of-the-Woods College Collection, Indiana

One dragon handle lacks a wing; both dragon handle heads are secured by wire (not as made); the tip section of the base dragon's tail is loose; old repair to one of the eagle's legs; a few insignificant nicks.
