Believed to be of Virginia origin as it has been compared to two labeled etageres, one from the collection of the Gay Mont Plantation of Virginia and one from a private collection in Virginia. The canterbury exhibits similar turnings to those etageres. In addition, the piece has been examined by three collectors of Virginia furnishings; these collectors believe the piece to be of Virginia origin.
