Oil on canvas (lined), inscribed on the verso "View in China / The City of Chusan / North of Canton / Taken by the British Forces / in Steamers, Frigates, & C. / in 1841 / C. Durand" and "The Frame a / Chinese Production / by R. P. Dana (or Dura) / Supercargo Ship / Clarendon / Goodhue & May / NY / Arrived June (or Jany) 1842." SS 12.75 x 17.25 in.; DOA 16.5 x 20 7/8 in.

By descent through the family of Calvin Durand (CT, 1802-1884) Mr. Durand was a clerk and, later, partner in the commission house of Goodhue & Company, New York City, NY.

New stretchers, allover craquelure; some re-touch and extensive infill to craquelure visible under black light inspection (professionally restored and conserved circa 1974); two large age cracks to proper right side of frame.
