Born in Maui, Hon Chew Hee grew up in China where he was trained in Chinese brush painting. Upon his return to the states, he trained at the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco. He furthered his studies under Fernand Leger and Andre Lhote in Paris during the 1940s. However, Hawaii was his home and in 1986 he was recognized by the Hawaii House of Representatives for his many achievements.
