Collection of Karen Love Jessee, NC

Born in California to Japanese parents, Okubo is perhaps best known for her tireless work documenting and sharing accounts of her experiences in the Japanese American internment camps following the outbreak of WWII. After receiving her bachelor and master degrees from the University of California in Berkeley, she studied art in Europe on a fellowship. Upon her return to the states she was commissioned by the Federal Arts Program for several projects, including one with Diego Rivera. By the mid-1950s, she settled in Greenwich Village.
