Oil on board, signed "Francis Dixon" lower right, presented in the work's likely original gilt wooden frame, the verso having a mid-century label from Findlay Galleries, Chicago and a typed biography of the artist giving no death date, the backing is also inscribed "Christmas Dec. 25, 1944" with an illegible owner's signature.

Francis Stillwell Dixon was born into a wealthy family with deep roots in old New York and Connecticut. Trained at the Art Students League, Dixon initially worked as an illustrator. The bulk of his career, however, was given to painting landscapes and maritime vistas. Dixon was a member of Allied Artists of America and the Salamagundi Club, New York. His work has been exhibited in such esteemed venues as the Corcoran Gallery, Washington, D. C. and The National Academy of Design, New York.
