Pastel on paper, unsigned, a label on the verso identifies the sitter as Robert Smith Gardiner, presented in an attractive gilt composition frame.

Robert Smith Gardiner was born on September 10, 1786 in East Hampton, Suffolk County, Long Island, NY. His parents were Dr. Nathaniel Gardiner (1759-1804) and Elizabeth Dering (1762-1801). Robert died unmarried on January 19, 1824 and is buried at the South End Burial Ground in East Hampton. His father was a surgeon for the American Army during the Revolution and served several years as a Representative in the State legislature and then was a successful merchant in New York City. A very well-executed bust length portrait of a well heeled young man of New York society.

Crack to glass; some loss to frame.
