An article in the New York Times on February 11, 1896 ran with this title "Aged Artist Murdered: Found in his Room in a School for Deaf Mutes." The murder of Eglau fascinated New Yorkers, as no arrests were ever made. He had been a respected artist, active at the Cooper Union Institute for years. He was particularly admired for his Hudson River views, such as this example.
