19th century S.S. Stewart Five-String Banjo

Circa 1890, cherry neck with rosewood fingerboard, open back metal pot, dowel stick stamped S. S. STEWART / PHILA. PA., the headstock fitted with celluloid pegs and stamped with the S.S.S. logo on the back, fitted with a later Grover tone ring. The 10.5 in. head is painted with a schooner under full sail.

Currently set to a 27 in. scale.

Lacks 5th string peg and tailpiece cover; the neck needs to be reset; (8) bracket hooks and (2) eyes are missing from the pot; no serial number is evident, however one might exist where the tone ring is attached to the dowel.
