Confederate North Carolina Contract Forage Cap

Circa 1860 - 62, with interior paper label reading "Manufactured by WM. P. DENNY, HIGH POINT, N.C., size...price," dark blue/black jean cloth, cotton lining, tarred cotton sweatband with yellow and red paint decoration, two-piece leather visor, adjustable leather chinstrap secured by pierced mother-of-pearl side buttons.

4.5 in. high; 4.75 in. crown

Associated with the Lattimore family of Cleveland County, NC. Six Lattimore sons served the Confederacy, five of whom enlisted in 1861.

Attributed and authenticated by recognized Civil War expert John Sexton, who deems the kepi "very rare original and authentic," further stating that it "may be the only North Carolina contractor marked hat known." Mr. Sexton's report is available for inspection and will be included with the lot. This kepi will also be included in Frederick R. Adolphus's forthcoming reference book on Confederate enlisted caps.

Scattered insect damage; 2 x 1.5 in. area of fabric loss to the crown; sweat band somewhat loose with fraying; leather elements dry, yet show minimal crazing; upper 25% of label is missing, overall intact and sound.
