Two Civil War Ruby Ambrotypes with Stanhope
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Both portraits unidentified, the first being a sixth plate of an armed Yankee infantryman wearing a nine-button frock coat and holding a musket; the second image - a ninth plate - shows a grim young boy in uniform. He closely resembles the celebrated John Clem, who would become the youngest non-commissioned officer in the Union Army after earning celebrity on the battlefield. This small ambro of a small soldier is worthy of close inspection. A copy of a known Clem image is included for comparison; the stanhope, carved of bone or ivory, 1 in. long, is affixed to a suspension loop and contains three Gettsyburg scenes: Hancock Avenue Looking South; The High Watermark of the Rebellion; The Soldiers' National Cemetery.

Both ambrotypes have light blue discoloration; the lid of the ninth plate case is loose; the sixth plate is in a half case only; the stanhope views exhibit moderate crystalization.
