Cecil Westcott (SC, 1858-1942), Edingsville
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Oil on board, signed "CW" lower right, two horizontal registers depict the popular Edisto Island resort of Edingsville after (above) and before (below) the devastating hurricane of 1893. Presented in later wooden frame with brass appliques in corners. Edisto native Cecil Wescott was by all accounts one of the island's more colorful characters in his day. Though also a musician, storyteller and postmaster, Westcott's enduring legacy survives as a visual artist. His folksy paintings of Edisto Island are highly prized by local collectors. Indeed, a Westcott scene graces the cover of Charles Spencer's EDISTO ISLAND, 1861 - 2006.
