This sculpture was included in a 1919 exhibition of 22 garden sculptures organized by W. Frank Purdy, president of the Art Alliance, at the Touchwood Gardens in New York City, just off 5th Avenue. A review of the exhibit was published in the April 1919 edition of THE TOUCHSTONE and The American Art Student Magazine (published by Mary Fanton Roberts, Inc., Vol. V, No. 1). A photograph of the garden installation shows this sculpture "at the far end of the garden in placid beauty." (p.330) A photograph of this sculpture, taken by A. B. Bogart, is included in MODELING MY LIFE by Janet Scudder (New York: Harcourt, Brace, & Company. 1925). This same photograph is preserved in the Photograph Archives at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C. A copy of Ms. Scudder's autobiography is included with the lot.
