The original portrait by Reni is said to have inspired Shelley in 1818 to write The Cenci: A Tragedy in Five Parts, based on the famous tale of Beatrice and her family's murder of their abusive husband and father in 1598. A circa 1900 cabinet card from the Libreria Spithover in Rome is included with this lot.
