Charles Lundgren studied at the New York School of Fine Art and Design, and also in Paris, Germany and Italy. He is primarily known as a maritime artist whose work was collected by President Eisenhower and John Wayne. A series of his sailing ship paintings became US postage stamps in the 1970s. This painting depicts the USS Samuel Chase, an Arthur Middleton class attack transport manned by the United States Coast Guard during World War II. She was named after Samuel Chase, a signatory to the Declaration of Independence. She received five battle stars for her WWII service and saw action in North Africa, Sicily, Anzio, Normandy and Pampelonne.
