Worked by Mary Shere Sanford "aged 11 years" in multi-colored wool thread, Berlin work on open weave linen with lavish floral border encompassing a vignette of verse from a variety of sources. The maker quotes from Albert Picket's "Picket's Juvenile Spelling," first published in 1818, Psalms, and Lindley Murray's "Introduction to the Engish Reader" published in 1831. The date of 1801 stitched in the bottom panel is likely to be that of 1861. Nicely framed and under glass.
