Pennsylvania Civil War Regimental History, Sword
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
A rare example of a Civil War veteran's literary work in progress: Cuffel, Charles A., HISTORY OF DURELL'S BATTERY IN THE CIVIL WAR, circa 1903, 304 pp., 8vo, red cloth covers. The intentionally disbound text consists of a title page mock-up plus printed pages interspersed with typewritten sheets having manuscript folios; accompanying the book are (33) copper halftone photo-blocks plus (3) copper line art blocks and a November 16, 1903 letter to the author from the Pennsylvania Adjutant General's office regarding the book's publication. Good condition overall considering that this is a "working copy" of the book. Charles A. Cuffel served in Pennsylvania artillery for nearly four years, enlisting as a private and mustering out a a 2nd Lieutenant. Oddly, included with the artillerist's book is an unmarked Model 1852 U. S. Naval officer's sword, 36 in. overall, with etched steel blade, wire and ray skin grip, gilt brass guard and pommel. Attic condition with heavy corrosion to the blade; considerable loss to skin wrap on on the scabbard.
