Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Oil and watercolor on milk glass, signed at lower left "J. C. Coope," housed under glass in a custom fitted frame with emerald green velvet backing incised and gilded and bearing a large "G" monogram. The miniature portrait depicts a well dressed woman admiring her long strand of pearls as she stands before an ornate gilt Rococo style vanity with mirror. J. Clausen Coope painted a portrait of Mrs. Robert Goelet (nee Elsie Whelen of Philadelphia), a well-known New York hostess and socialite. The portrait was mentioned in a New York Times article published on February 23, 1908. Miniature portraits by Coope of Lady Frankland, Mrs. John A. di Zerega and Mrs. John E. Alexandre were included in the Peter Marie Collection of Miniatures presented to the New York Historical Society in 1905, representing "his whim as a friend of fair ladies" (New York Times, April 2, 1903).
