Oil on board, signed "Carleton Wiggins NA" lower left, presented in later gilt and gesso frame. Wiggins specialized in pastoral landscapes with a special emphasis on grazing cattle. The artist initially studied at the National Academy of Design under George Inness prior to being swept away by the Barbizon School in France. Becoming an Associate of the National Academy in 1890, Wiggins helped establish the celebrated artists' colony in Old Lyme, Connecticut. His works are held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Corcoran Gallery and the Art Institute of Chicago.
