Ovoid form with applied wide ear handles, alkaline glaze with attractive and unusual alkaline drips to shoulder and jar body, with Dave's point marks (eight to indicate gallon capacity) and horseshoe incised on shoulder; additionally inscribed in script "LM Oct 26 1857." This important piece of pottery comes from the direct line of descent of its original owner, Ella Jane Lewie, born in 1833 in Drafts Mill, Lexington, SC, and her husband, Elias S. Sease, born in 1823, also of Drafts Mill. Following their deaths, the jar passed down the maternal line to their daughter, Madora Sease Craps (1868-1946), then to the granddaughter, Grovie Craps Hayes (1896-1986), to the present owner, the great grandson, Jack Hayes.
