Rare North Carolina Election Tickets for 1868
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Provide Republican and Democratic Party listings of all local and state candidates. The Republican ticket, 12 x 4 in., is titled "For the Constitution" and refers to the pending revision of North Carolina's racially exclusive constitution. Newspaper editor William Holden headlines the candidate listing and was, in fact, elected. His subsequent anti-KKK activities, however, lead in large part to his impeachment and removal from office in 1871. The Democrats countered with the "Conservative Ticket / Against the Constitution," 14 x 3.75 in. Former Confederate congressman Thomas Ashe leads the way as gubernatorial candidate. The listing contains many surnames from prominent Carolina families.

Estate of the late Eugene Grissom Moss and the late Maria Frances Bullock, Granville County, North Carolina.

Both imprints toned and with creases; the Holden piece with loss to its upper right corner.
