Two Arkansas-to-North Carolina Civil War Letters

Two letters from John M. Lyon in Bradley County, AR to John Fleming in Granville County, NC as follows: ALS, July 28, 1862, two pp, quarto, folded, having address panel carrying a CSA #5 10-cent stamp tied with a clear Jackson, Mississippi cds. It reads in small part: "...times hard in Ark Bacon is scerce...I would answered your letter before but the yankeys have taken the mississippi river about the time your letter came to hand..."; This letter was probably hand-carried through the lines to Jackson for posting. ALS, February 3, 1863, two pp., small 4to, reading in small part: "...the yankeys got the post on the Ark river below Pine Bluff we kild 5000 yankeys our loss 100 kill an wonded...if I had known the negroes would had bin sold I would bin at th sale...the men from 18 to 40 yers old is going to the army from this state..."

Both letters with light stains, the paper remains sound. Very good condition.
