Garth Clark, noted author on the ceramic arts and the owner of the Garth Clark Gallery in New York, has written: ÒKaren Karnes is unquestionably one of the most important and seminal figures in American Ceramic Art today. WeÕve seen in her work an extraordinary growth, from a maker of functional ware to a maker of symbolic vessels that express more sculptural concerns and play with feelings of sensuality and fecundity. Through her involvement with Black Mountain School and her extensive influence in presenting workshops, she has raised the level of salt glaze wares, not just in the United States but abroad as well, and has earned her place in the Ceramic Hall of Fame.Ó
