Oil on canvas, unsigned, probably late 19th century, Union soldiers are shown lounging about or doing routine chores while a distant picket stands watch. The men inhabit a hilly landscape by the water that, although unidentified, is typical of Northern Virginia estuaries. On a period stretcher having corner brackets bearing 1883 and 1885 patent dates. The whole in a modern wooden frame.
