Oil on canvas, unsigned, the verso retaining an old paper label reading "Portrait of W. Boyce, composer of sacred music, by Allan Ramsay," housed in an 18th century gilt wood frame likely original to the painting. The gentleman depicted half length, seated before a magnificent organ whose pipes are discernible in the background. He is shown in partial profile with well modeled features. Although the sitter does not bear resemblance to known depictions of William Boyce, future research may reveal the sitter's identity.
