The Clyde Model Yacht Club was formed in 1856, proposing to take in yachts of under 8 tons only. It soon dropped the word ÔmodelÕ from its title and offered racing to much larger yachts. It became the Royal Clyde Yacht Club in 1872. In the same year it established itself at the Royal Marine Hotel at HunterÕs Quay, which it purchased outright a few years later. The Clyde rapidly became a centre for yachting second only to Cowes. By 1902 the Royal Clyde had 1000 members and over 400 yachts. The club challenged for the AmericaÕs Cup in 1887. The club joined with The Royal Northern Yacht Club in 1978 and continues its storied history.
