NGC AU55, hints of luster remain in the recesses, the surfaces showing small marks consistent with the grade. The triangular die crack apparent in the left field at 9 o'clock has been noted in other specimens. Curiously, despite a modest mintage of 16,500 coins, no uncirculated examples of the 1871-S eagle are known to exist. In fact, the 2016 Redbook only lists values for this coin through AU55 ($7500).
