Two North Carolina Civil War Newspapers
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Issues of the "Hillsborough Recorder" for July 27, 1864 and June 21, 1865, each 4pp., small folio. Both papers have excellent content. Highlighting the 1864 issue is a report on the sinking of the C.S.S. Alabama and a listing of the ships she had captured or destroyed. The 1865 paper, now under Yankee control, carries a message from Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston explaining his reasoning behind the surrender to Sherman. An anachronistic notice in this early postwar paper states that the Orange County sheriff is holding a runaway slave who may be claimed by his owner!

Descended from the Leigh Family Estate Collection, of Chapel Hill, NC.

Fair condition with splits and heavy staining.
