Sterling Silver Presentation Mint Julep
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
With engraved inscription to the front reading "F. P. Haywood / from / W. W. Vass. / Christmas. 1905." The cup was made by Meriden and retailed by Hennegen Bates Co. of Baltimore. It is believed that this cup was a gift from William Worrell Vass, Jr., to Frank P. Haywood, Jr. W. W. Vass, Jr., son of Major William W. Vass, President and secretary for the Raleigh & Gaston Railroad. By 1900 he was employed with Grimes and Vass, and later became a cashier for the Wake County Savings Bank. Frank Haywood is listed as a bookkeeper at Citizens National Bank and living at 103 S. McDowell with his father in the 1900 directory. It is interesting to note that Frank's father filed two claims for reparation from the Southern Claims Commission, both of which were disallowed.
